Who pays for what in a wedding?

One of the first questions that people ask right after a couple becomes engaged is, “how are we going to pay for the wedding?” It is traditional for most of the costs of the wedding are paid by the bride’s family while the groom pays for the reception dinner and the honeymoon. Though, recently many couples are being to pay for wedding expenses 50/50, between the groom and bride’s family. Below I have listed a “traditional” guide for paying for your wedding, though of course you can adapt it to your personal preferences.

The bride and her family will typically pay for the rental items. They will also make plans for out of town guest, unless the wedding is taking place in the groom’s hometown. The costs of the ceremony such as the ceremony cite fee, the decorations, flowers for the reception and ceremony all are paid for by the bride. Favors such as brides maids wedding gifts and even the guests favors are paid for by the bride in traditional wedding etiquette. Flowers for the corsages, ceremony, bouquets and such are the bride’s family’s duty. Gratuity and service tips, grooms wedding gift and ring, guest book, the bride’s medical checkup, all stationary such as invites and thank you cards, lingerie, photographer, programs, reception location fees, the breakfast before the wedding, the wedding planner fee, and of course the wedding gown are all a part of the bride and her family’s responsibility in a traditional setting.

The groom and his family are in charge of the matching men’s wear for the wedding party. The drinks at the reception as well as the rehearsal dinner expenses are the groom’s responsibility. The bride’s wedding gift and the wedding ring for her as well as her flowers, the groomsmen’s gifts, your blood tests, the honeymoon expensive, marriage license, officiate fee and his wedding attire are all part of the groom’s expensive according to traditional wedding etiquette.

Bridal party, groomsmen, ushers, and others in the wedding party are responsible for travel expenses, a shower and wedding gift, as well as their own attire.

Now a day’s many couples are paying for their own wedding, so they opt to “do it themselves” in order to make it cheaper. It also means that you have more control over your big day because in truth the person paying for the wedding tends to be the one that makes the decisions. So there are various ways to save money when planning your wedding. Of course you can do it yourself decorations which will save money, but if you are looking for a huge money saver, it is all about location. It is important to think about what king of wedding you want. Do you want and outdoor wedding, a traditional wedding at a church, or even a ballroom wedding? If you want to go cheap without losing a bit of class, I would suggest looking into an outdoor wedding at either a park, a beach, or even in your back yard. Moral of the story is to know what you want your wedding to be and plan your budget in accordance to you, your fiancé, and both of your families desires.
